Obituary of Fanny Mar

Fanny Mar, aged 89, passed away on November 19, 2021, surrounded by family in her home in Shoreline, Washington. Fanny was born on January 18, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts, to her parents, Cloue Goon Eng and Moy Det Gim. She grew up in Seattle and often worked afterschool in the kitchen of her father’s tavern and chop suey house where she learned to cook. She had a knack for numbers which helped her in her jobs at the phone company, King County Health Department, and eventually during her time as a co-owner of The Pink Dragon restaurant with her first husband in Bellevue, Washington. In 1972, Fanny moved to Boston, Massachusetts to marry the love of her life, Chuck Mar. For more than 20 years, Fanny made frequent trips to Seattle and also hosted many family members who visited her on the east coast. While in Boston, Fanny worked for the US Department of Transportation in the personnel department. She was beloved by many of her co-workers and was the go-to person for all questions related to insurance and retirement benefits. In the summer of 1995, Fanny retired from the feds, and she and Chuck drove cross-country to relocate into their new home next door to her son. Upon retirement, Fanny and Chuck took cruises around the world. She sent postcards to her family from her travels in China, Finland, Japan, Spain, the Caribbean, and many others. Although Fanny said she ate pretty good on the cruises, she always looked forward to coming back home. Retirement didn’t stop Fanny from being an avid cook and baker. She hosted monthly Sunday dinners at her home for her children and their families, where she prepared 5-course Chinese meals (plus dessert!). When not cooking, Fanny enjoyed playing mahjong and looking after her grandchildren. Fanny is survived by her three children Janis (Randy) Soo, Barbara (Phil) Van Eynde, and Coleman (Frances) Mar; her brother David (Fay) Eng; six granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her five siblings Benjamin, Carrie, Howard, Herbert, and Cora. There will be a Celebration of Life for Fanny on Monday, December 20, 2021 starting at 12:30pm at the Embassy Suites (Baker Room) in Lynnwood, Washington. Fanny will be placed next to Chuck at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Providence Hospice of Seattle Foundation, 2811 S. 102nd Street, Suite 220, Tukwila, WA 98168.
