Catherine Jane Barker, beloved wife, mother and long-time teacher in the Edmonds School District, passed away in the early evening on November 13th, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and complications of a recent stroke. She will always be remembered for her intelligence and quick wit, having employed such with her family and her many students during her too short 77 years on this earth. Born in Winnipeg, MB, to Jack and Audrey Hart, she was the middle child of three (Rick and Gord Hart). Catherine moved as a child to the warmer climes of Penticton, BC, where she spent her formative years, and reminisced frequently about the beautiful lakes and sunshine filled summers. A good student, with a penchant for Home Economics, she often quoted the inviolate rules of cooking (although she was known to make some ingredient “substitutions” on occasion), and the benefits of a stitch in time. Upon graduation from Penticton High School, Catherine’s bold spirit inspired a move to Vancouver, BC, with a classmate and fellow Beatles lover, Beverly Canty, with whom she would maintain a lifelong friendship. Working in the big city, she would soon meet the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Barker, who entertained Catherine in his hometown with many activities, including the truly Canadian sport of curling. Their rapid romance led to marriage just before Catherine’s 21st birthday, a marriage that would last for over 56 years. Wasting little time, Bob and Catherine had two children, Bruce and Darcey, raising them gladly in the midst of the larger Hart and Barker clans of British Columbia. In 1979, work opportunities took Catherine’s family to nearby Washington State, where her enchantment with the former mill town of Edmonds, WA, led her to declare “this is where we will live”, and she stayed true to that declaration for the rest of her life. Catherine furthered her education as a young mother, determined as an adult learner to reach her goal of becoming a teacher. The process took the better part of 10 years, concluding at the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Teaching Certificate. With accolades of Phi Beta Kappa attached to her degree, Catherine was a proud Husky. She was quickly snapped up by the Edmonds School District and taught multiple grades for over 25 years at College Place, Martha Lake and Cedar Way Elementary schools. Catherine’s commitment and good humor led her to develop long lasting relationships amongst her teaching colleagues and students, becoming a mentor to many and a teacher’s union representative (“you can’t scare me, I’m working for the UNION!”). Catherine imbued her love of learning to all those she came in contact with and set the best possible example to her children and grandchildren. Retirement from teaching responsibilities did not slow Catherine down, as these were the golden years where she could indulge her love of History and explore the world with Bob. Ever the planner, she embraced Rick Steves and “Europe through the Back Door”, travelling extensively overseas to Great Britan, France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Hungary and many of the great wonders of the world. She was also a lover of fine art and the theater, something she enjoyed on multiple trips to New York with Bob and Darcey. Thousands of photographs catalogue these adventures, bringing both pleasure and stinging sadness to those she now leaves behind. In her final years, despite a challenging diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease, Catherine persevered and never lost connection with those she loved, thankfully. It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that her burgeoning optimism and laughing spirit will be remembered, forever. Catherine Barker will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Bob Barker, and her elder brother, Rick Hart (Louanne), her two children Bruce Barker (Danica) and Darcey Barker (Brian Harper) and grandchildren Payton and Logan Barker, along with many more from the extended Hart and Barker family. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Edmonds Yacht Club on Sunday, January 21st, between the hours of 1:30 - 4:00 PM. In Lieu of flowers, all friends and family of Catherine are encouraged to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association.

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.
If in any part of these Terms of Use is held, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to be invalid or unenforceable, such part of these Terms of Use shall be eliminated to the extent permitted in that jurisdiction, for purposes of that jurisdiction, and the remaining Terms of Use shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.
These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified. It is your responsibility to review these Terms of Use regularly.
