Dear Kathy, Lisa and Jen,
I learned of Joe's passing only very recently. Even though I know he battled long and hard, I am still shocked, and deeply saddened. He absolutely adored all three of you ladies; that was evident. He was also very courteous to me, and that was very appreciated as it's not always easy to have your workplace be in someone else's home. I feel honored to have been able to meet all of you through Jessie, and to witness a marriage as strong and respectful as Kathy and Joe's. That is truly something to aspire to. You are all in my heart, and my thoughts are with you as you move forward and navigate life in a new and different way.
With love and friendship always,
Shana Sloan

I remember first meeting Joe at a mutual friends' get-together. I was a young teacher working too many hours and it was a Saturday night. I was ready to meet new people and dance the night away. Little did I know that most of the guys at this event were coming off 60+ hours a week of studies and projects and exams at CMU and this was the first real day of spring vacation for them. Most were prepping heavily for exams. The conversations were loaded with "business talk" and marketing theories and the latest technologies and all that boring stuff. Yikes! I couldn't get a word in edgewise! Only two seemed interested or even able to dance to a beat. And Joe was one of them. He literally swept me off my feet with a twirling dance move he executed in his earth shoes, corduroy bell-bottom pants and wool pullover sweater--the common attire of the grad student for whom fashion was not high on the list. I donned my best platform dance shoes and my "Saturday Night Fever" look-alike women's pant suit in stunning light blue polyester. My Farah Faucett hairdo withstood the twirling. I thought to myself, "this guy's got promise." Then, he politely thanked me and walked away. That took me by surprise at first. I realized later that he had sought out my friend Margie who was engaged to his friend, Mark, to ask her if she thought I would give him my phone number. She, of course, said that I would. Half an hour later, Joe asked me if we could get together again for a real date---maybe at a dance club that I liked--with the notion that we'd wait till his exams week was over. Well, the rest is history! Joe and I danced our way to the altar one year later in 1980. And we continued to take dance lessons for nearly 30 years. My Joey took me dancing on our 40th anniversary at an outdoor venue in Leavenworth after a 5-mile hike at Bloedel Reserve earlier that day. Joe believed in living every moment to the fullest.
