We will miss Van and her warm smile at our school. Van had a heart for kids and a love for learning.

Vanette will be greatly missed. She has been part of our family for over 60 years. She was my teacher, mentor and great friend. She taught me not only to crotchet, but to make taffy and laugh at life. We'll miss her midnight arrivals on New Years Eve;trips to Arizona; her wise counsel & practicality. She was mother's best friend who came to help when things were wrong. The Denton Familly will miss her. Especially during Baseball season when we cheered on the Mariners.

Van gave of herself throughout her life to her family, friends, co-workers adn the causes she believed in. I worked with her when she was on the Board of Directors of the Seattle Indian Health Board and did so much to move the organization forward. Her capacity for work, good ideas and encouragement knew no bounds. We remained friends when we went our different ways and met periodically throughout the years. I will miss her.

Ms. Van Chase will be greatly missed as a warm and charismatic substitute teacher at both of our schools. She always had the best stories to share with students. She was our favorite sub.

She was a wonderful and intelligent woman. Reading her accomplishments here makes me feel lucky to have met someone like here. It's no wonder she always had the best stories as a substitute teacher.

I was a student tutor for the office of minority affairs working under Van in the early 80s. I was outed as gay by a black and an Asian student, and called homophobic slurs by them. Van did nothing. Van herself was homophobic and fired me for it. She allowed her Mexican-American male assistant to tell me that I needed to see a psychiatrist for being gay. As you can imagine, that's tough on a young person. It took me 2 years to get a letter of recommendation out of her , which she deliberately typed badly so that I couldn't use it for a recommendation. It always astounded me that she herself was a minority and yet was so hateful to gays. I was glad to see she lived to see anti-discrimination laws for glbt persons in this state and civil unions.
