Obituary of Elsie Cecilia Thorp

color: black Age 100, died August 6, 2009. Passed away at the Sunshine Home Kenmore, WA. Born Elsie C. Harrington December 10, 1908 in Cle Elum, WA to William and Elizabeth Harrington, the fourth of six children. Baptized in St. Josephs Church January 1909, and graduated high school, St. Josephs Academy, Yakima, WA, 1926. Attended St. Catherines Womens College, St. Paul, MN. Received a typist-stenographer certificate from Yakima Business College. Worked at the Yakima Chamber of Commerce and the Lovering Tire Co. May 26, 1932 Elsie married Calvin Shannon Thorp, GG Grandson of Fielden M. Thorp, First settler of the Yakima Valley. In 1941 at the start of WWII she took a job as a stenographer in the Bremerton Naval Shipyard. Before her retirement she received many awards for the high quality of her work and advanced to the position of Top Supervisory Procurement Agent for the ships being built and repaired there. Elsies vacations were often spent with her daughter at the birth of each grandchild. Weekends she took care of her parents in Seattle. She was a member of the Edmonds Dominican Sisters Mothers Club, helped in the office of their mother-house and was a chauffeur for the sisters at Star of the Sea School in Bremerton. Elsie retired to Seattle and took care of her mother, later working as a switchboard operator when her mother was in Mt. St. Vincents nursing home, In her 60s and 70s She enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and Europe. Elsie is survived by her son, Richard Shannon Thorp (Joan), daughters, Barbara Ann Whalen (William C.) and Joan Elizabeth Talbert, 11 grandchildren, 18 G grandchildren, one GG grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother, William Al Harrington, Moses Lake; sisters, Mina Bischoff, Yakima, WA; Pricilla Gustafson, Seattle, WA; Cereatha Harrington, Seattle, WA; and Gertrude Batterson, Lake Forest Park, WA; also by her grandsons, Stephen Whalen, Elijah Whalen and son-in-law, Thomas Talbert. Memorial donations may be given to Providence Hospice of Seattle, 425 Pontius Ave. N STE 300 98109.
