Obituary of Howard Dallas Duell

Howard Dallas Duell age 79, died on Feb 13, 2009 in Everett, WA. Born in Philadelphia, PA, raised in Spokane, he lived in Edmonds since 1960. Howard was married to Virginia (Bertis) for 59 years. A decorated Korean War veteran, he served in the 1 st Marine Division and survived the Chosin Reservoir battle. He earned a BA in Art from EWU in 1955 and an MFA from UW in 1957. He was an art instructor at Edmonds CC and Everett CC (1965-1989) and taught Arts Crafts in Nome, AK (1964-65) for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He served as chair of Edmonds Community College Art Department and was gallery coordinator for the PRIMA Gallery. A member of the NW Designer Craftsmen, NW Institute of Sculpture, and Pacific NW Arts Crafts, Howard showed his painting, sculpture, and crafts in exhibits and competitions. His work won numerous awards, including First Prize for Wood and an Award for Distinction from the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York. Howards commissions include pieces for private collections and public spaces all over the Pacific NW. He worked with paint, metal, wood, stone, and clay and was an early innovator using found objects in art. His sophisticated sense of humor was often evident in his work. Howard is survived by his wife, Virginia; brother, Earl of Spokane; children Dallas (Christine) of Ballard, Marc (Gudrun Schimmel) of Arlington, Gina of Deming, and Celia Creek (Steven) of La Mesa, CA; 12 grandchildren; 1 great grandson. He was preceded in death by parents Howard and Emma Duell and daughter Melinda Ann Duell. A Memorial was held at Becks Funeral Home, 405 5 th Ave S, Edmonds, 425-771-1234, Feb. 28 at 2 pm.
