Sad news. I had the pleasure of knowing Jack. He was a great mentor and teacher of everything HUD. Always friendly at HUD conferences, wearing his baseball cap! I still remember his phrase - “Help me get to yes”

I met Jack in 1972 when he interviewed and hired me as an “Urban Intern” in the Milwaukee HUD office as I was completing my VISTA program. He took a chance on a guy with a less than stellar academic record - and set me on an amazing 50-year career path. Later I had the opportunity to work with Jack on many hiring panels and observed his thoroughness and thoughtfulness for identifying just the right candidate.
Jack and I worked together over the years in Milwaukee, then Chicago, and finally on various HUD conferences and committees as distant division directors with Jack in Seattle and me in Chicago and Boston. Over the years we haunted dive bars in Milwaukee, Chicago, Denver, and DC with our favorite the Post Pub on L Street. We went to great lengths and extensive cab rides to reach the best chili place or crab shack. (When Barb and I visited Jack and Mary in Seattle, we always stepped up our dining choices several notches.) Widely respected for his thoughtful pursuit of sound public policy, Jack was selected throughout the decades by HUD’s senior leadership to serve on committees, task forces, and presentation panels. While I had the opportunity to observe an admirable professional career, it is his friendship over more than 5 decades that means the most for me. My condolences to Mary and family.
