So sorry to hear this news. I knew Gary through the VA, where I spent time talking with him through a long hospitalization to heal a pesky ulcer; he was pretty frustrated but always the jokester, his loud booming voice let the world know he was piss and vinegar with a bit of marshmallow inside. I remember his determination to walk again and, by golly, he got up on those crutches and somehow maneuvered his paralyzed legs enough to pivot a few steps; no small feat to balance like that. Later, we became friends and I had him to supper one time; he came in his red flashy tricked up convertible and proceeded to hoist himself up my front porch stairs, pull his wheelchair up after him, and then lift himself from the porch floor into his his chair; no help needed, not Gary. Nothing was going to stop him. We lost touch over time, but I bumped into him last year at Home Depot where we chatted about the good ol' days. So long Gary, onto the next adventure, free.

I don't know if Gary would even remember me, I was a neighbor's grandchild, but I remember he would visit my grandmother and would tell the funniest jokes and stories. I visited him a few times and was impressed by his classic cars. When I grew up I unfortunately became disconnected from Gary, but I still thought of him. I almost tried to visit last year, but I heard from my mother that he was in so much pain he was bedridden. I admire the strength it must have taken for him to last all these years in chronic pain.
