Timoteo Bingcang Tolentino graced this world on June 1, 1938. He was born in a small province on Iloilo, an island just south of the main island of the Philippines. His parents, Sinforoso and Socorro Tolentino were both teachers. He was the fourth born among his siblings of two brother and three sisters. The family did not have much growing up but his parents worked very hard to ensure their children all received a proper education to equip them for a better life. My father initially had other ideas. Apparently he was quite the partier in his youth, never paying too much attention to his studies. What I learned later from his siblings is that although he may have had a lot of late nights, doing what young men did at the time, he always seemed to ace all of his assignments and his tests. His siblings often commented on how he was clearly the smartest of all of them and yet he barely even tried. Dad got his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Polytechnic University of the Philippines and moved to Tarlac, another small province just a few hours north of Manila. He worked at the Cojuanco Sugar Central as an Engineer and it was there where he met my mother, Remedios Magtuto Afable. It was an unlikely pairing as my father was more of a rebel without a cause and Mom was just about to enter the convent. But somehow, some way they fell in love and were married on June 20, 1962. This June would have been their 48 th Anniversary. Dad was fortunate enough to be one of the civilian contract engineers hired by the U.S. Government to work on various projects in the area and in 1966 he was given the opportunity to work in Guam but it was at the expense of leaving my brothers Albert and Homer, and my Mom who was pregnant with Dino at the time. It was a sacrifice he was willing to make with the promise of being able to provide a better life for his family. The commanding officer in his charge was so impressed with Dads work, he continued to find projects for Dad just to keep him around as his contract was soon to expire. He was able to stay in Guam long enough to apply for immigration and when he finally became a citizen of the United States of America, after four lonely years, he sent for his family in 1970. It was a great reunion, so Im told! (I was born four years later). Our family would then embark on a journey every two years or so, taking us to Okinawa, Japan twice; Honolulu, Hawaii several times; and back to the Philippines where he was stationed at Subic Bay Naval Station. It was there in the Philippines whe
